Children who come into the foster care system, come with different levels of abuse or neglect. Some come with very little trauma and just need a regular foster home until their parents are able to prove to the courts they are ready to care for their children properly.
Other kids have been traumatized by extreme abuse and possibly prolonged abuse. These children need more than just a safe place to live. They need professional foster parenting help for an extended period. Many will be placed in residential facilities, where they’ll receive therapy and counseling to begin the healing process. But a residential treatment facility is not the best option for young children.
Research shows that children who were harmed in a relationship can experience healing in a relationship. So once these children are on their path to healing, their greatest need is to be in a relationship with a real foster parent, in a real home.
Unfortunately, basic foster parents aren’t trained to address the needs of a child who has experienced this much trauma. That’s why we’re equipping Professional Foster Parents who can continue the child’s healing for the initial six months after leaving a residential facility.
