‘He Waited’: Arrow family shares emotional adoption journey

In a testament to the power of unconditional love, a medically fragile foster youth held on to life just long enough to experience the security of a permanent family, passing away peacefully on the very day his adoption was finalized.

The journey began when Alyssa Sadler and her family stepped into foster care with a deep sense of purpose, opening their hearts to a pair of distant kinship children. From the moment they welcomed the siblings, their reality shifted into an intense balancing act of critical medical advocacy and fierce protection.

“Our Arrow Foster Care story began with a simple but life-changing question, if not us, then who?” Alyssa Sadler said. “When we opened our home, we had no idea how deeply our lives would be changed.”

One of the children was just over a year old. The other was a 5-month-old baby boy who had already survived severe, catastrophic abuse that left him in an almost vegetative state. With doctors entirely uncertain of his neurological or physical future, the family was explicitly warned that the path ahead would be difficult, exhausting and uncertain.

“From the very beginning, we knew this was God’s calling on our lives,” Sadler said. “We knew these children needed more than a placement. They needed a family. They needed love, safety, advocacy and people willing to walk through the impossible beside them, so we said yes.”

Saying yes meant transforming their daily existence.

Their home quickly adapted to accommodate the intense needs of a critically ill child, they described it as becoming a near specialized care facility.

“Our days quickly became filled with countless doctor appointments, therapy sessions, specialist visits, hospital stays and meetings with medical teams,” Sadler said. “There were feeding tubes, medications, equipment, oxygen monitors, and emergency plans. Nurses and therapists constantly came in and out of our home. At times it felt like our house had become part hospital, part therapy center and part sanctuary.”

The physical and emotional toll was immense, testing the family’s resilience through sleepless nights.

“The nights were long, the fear was heavy and the exhaustion was real,” Sadler said. “Through every single step, God walked beside us. In the middle of heartbreak, He provided strength we did not have on our own, giving us peace during terrifying moments, comfort during setbacks, and joy in the smallest victories.”

Those small victories looked like a smile, a sound, a peaceful night of sleep or a squeeze of a tiny hand.

Despite the severe physical limitations caused by early trauma, the baby boy left a mark on everyone who crossed his path.

“Our son taught us what true courage looked like,” Sadler said. “Though his body was broken by the abuse he suffered, his life carried incredible purpose. He brought people together, softened hearts, strengthened our faith and showed us what unconditional love truly means.”

After months of rigorous advocacy, medical hurdles and intense prayer, the family finally arrived at the long-awaited legal milestone, adoption day. This would secure his place in their family permanently.

However, the day concluded with a bittersweet twist, which the family views as an act of divine timing.

“Adoption day was the day we had prayed and fought for,” Sadler said. “The day he officially became ours forever. Surrounded by love, our family celebrated the moment God had written long before we ever knew him, and in a moment that only Heaven could orchestrate, our sweet boy peacefully went to be with Jesus on the very same day.”

The timing of his passing left the family with a deep conviction that the child understood his earthly journey was complete, having finally achieved the ultimate milestone of belonging.

“We truly believe he waited,” Sadler said. “We believe God helped him hold on until he knew he was safe, chosen and finally a part of a forever family.”

Though grieving an immense loss, Alyssa explains that her family is anchored by a profound appreciation for the time they were granted to shield and cherish the life of their son.

“While our hearts will forever carry the ache of losing him, they also carry overwhelming gratitude,” Sadler said. “Gratitude that God trusted us to love him, that we were able to be his parents, that his life, no matter how short, changed ours forever.”

Reflecting on their experience, Alyssa emphasized that the rewards of providing a sanctuary for a child outweigh the pain of the journey.

“Foster care is not easy,” Sadler said. “It is messy, painful, exhausting and heartbreaking, but it is also holy work. It is showing up when youth need someone most, choosing love in the middle of uncertainty, and for us, it became the clearest picture of God’s love we have ever experienced.”

Even as they navigate their own grief, Sadler and her family remain steadfast in their commitment to fostering, looking forward to the lives they have yet to touch.

“Our Arrow Foster Care story was a story of heartbreak, faith, healing and the kind of love that lasts far beyond this earth,” Sadler said. “No matter what the future holds, we will continue to open our hearts and our home to any child God brings to our doorstep.”

The team at Arrow is unimaginably moved by Sadler’s beautiful, heartbreaking story. Our hearts are heavy, and we are lifting up Alyssa, her family and everyone who loved this sweet boy.
