Big emotions often took over when a client first began services with Arrow.
Tantrums could quickly escalate into aggression and property destruction, leaving both the client and her caregiver feeling overwhelmed.
“It was clear she needed support in learning how to recognize and manage those intense feelings in healthier ways,” an Arrow Spokesperson said.
Over the past several months, that support has taken shape through consistent work with Behavioral Health Services. Alongside her Behavioral Support Specialist, Abrielle Siordia, the client began building practical coping skills designed to help her slow down, identify her emotions and respond with intention. Together, they practiced strategies like deep breathing and taking breaks, simple but powerful tools that created space between feeling overwhelmed and reacting.
That work led to a moment her caregiver will not forget.
Recently, when the client began to feel upset, something changed. Instead of escalating into a tantrum, she paused and recognized what she was feeling and made a different choice. Calmly, she asked if she could go to her room to take a break and practice her deep breathing.
“For a child who once struggled to pause in those moments, this was a powerful step forward,” Siordia said.
Later, the client shared the moment herself with Siordia, beaming with pride as she explained how she used her coping skills. Her excitement was unmistakable. She was not just practicing new behaviors but beginning to believe in her ability to manage her emotions.
“She was excited and proud of the choice she made,” Siordia said. “An important sign that she is not only learning the skills but beginning to believe in her own ability to use them.”
This client’s growing ability to pause, choose a coping strategy and take pride in her progress reflects the mission of Arrow’s Behavioral Health Services. It is a reminder that meaningful change often begins with a single choice and the confidence to make it again.
A pause, a deep breath and a decision to try something different. Stories like this are built on moments that may seem small at first glance but carry lasting impact.
