Arrow was honored to join Craig Cohen on Houston Public Media’s Houston Matters radio show on Thursday, Feb. 12, for a meaningful conversation about multicultural adoptions in Texas.

Scott Batson, Associate VP of Capacity Development, and Natalie Kelly, an adoptive parent of five African American children, shared insight into how adoption works across the state and why culturally responsive placements matter.
The discussion centered on a topic that is not always openly addressed but is critical for children and families navigating the adoption journey.

During the segment, Scott explained the adoption process in Texas and how agencies like Arrow work to prepare families and support children every step of the way. Natalie offered a powerful personal perspective, speaking about her family’s experience and the intentionality required to nurture identity and belonging.
The conversation also highlighted the importance of placing children in homes with similar cultural and racial backgrounds whenever possible. At the same time, the reality of capacity challenges and emergency placements means that may not always happen. In those cases, it is essential for adoptive families to actively honor and incorporate their child’s culture and background into daily life, community and traditions.
We are grateful to Houston Matters and Houston Public Media for creating space for this impactful dialogue and for helping shine a light on the needs of children and families across our region.
