June marks National Reunification Month, a time to highlight the ultimate goal of foster care. In Texas, the primary mission of the foster care system is to safely return youth to their biological families by supporting parents and relatives as they build a safe, stable home environment.
When foster youth can safely return to their biological roots, families heal and bonds are restored. For one 11-year-old boy, this month brings the ultimate milestone.
Harry joined Arrow’s Treatment Foster Care (TFC) program 18 months ago. His journey through the system began at just 5 years old following allegations that he threatened to harm a family member. For six years, he moved in and out of different homes, struggling to find stability.
By the time Harry arrived at Arrow, the trauma of his unstable childhood showed up in his behavior. He struggled with lying, stealing and eloping from school.
“We worked close with Aiden,” LaShundra Ellis an Arrow Clinical Case Manager said.
The Arrow team placed Aiden with a dedicated foster family that was highly active in their local church. In this structured, supportive environment, Harry found a sense of belonging. He became involved in the church community, gave his life to Christ and began looking toward the future.
As Harry worked through his behavioral challenges and began meeting his program goals, the team started praying with him about finding a permanent home with his biological family.
Just as Harry was completing the program and preparing for a transition to a traditional foster home, his biological uncle reached out to Arrow.
The reunion required patience from everyone involved. Because of the allegations from Harry’s early childhood, his uncle was understandably timid at first. However, the Arrow team and Aiden remained patient. Through regular meetings and planned visits, they showed his uncle the immense hard work Harry put into his therapy and the deep changes he made in his life.
Now,Harry’s time in the foster care system comes to an end. Instead of moving to another foster home, he is a part of his biological family once again.
Harry leaves the program full of hope and faith, knowing his life matters. While he is reuniting with his family, he leaves with a lifelong support system in his Arrow team.
“This is why I do this,” his case manager said. “I’m grateful for the therapeutic options children with behaviors are provided through Arrow.”
According to Harry team at Arrow, the prayers and support will continue even though he is reunified with family.
